Gorgeous gardens on traffic medians, planted and cared for by volunteers

Gateway Gardens bring living color to busy Millersville Village intersections

Green-thumbed volunteers created and maintain traffic-median gardens that say to all who pass by, “We care about our community.”

In 2009, we had a big idea. To transform two enormous, crumbling concrete medians into welcoming planted beds that would brighten busy gateways to Millersville Village. For a long time, we couldn’t get the approvals we needed. But we persisted, and it paid off.

In 2011, with help from our Mayor’s neighborhood liaison, we got the green light, and help with demolition and reconstruction from Indy’s Department of Public Works. With a Greenspace award through Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) and Indianapolis Power & Light we were able to fund a landscape architect’s plan and buy hundreds of shrubs and flowers.

Hard-working volunteers from our neighborhoods, KIB and other supporters then made magic happen.

We filled in the roadway islands with dirt, gravel paths and a few huge concrete pots. And we planted a stunning variety of flowering perennials, grasses and evergreens, plus annuals in the pots. What a transformatioin!

Thanks to seemingly tireless volunteers who have been watering, mulching, weeding, trimming, replanting and more, ever since… and to supporters who have sent donations our way for this… these remarkable, natural oases continue to be living tributes to community pride and volunteer spirit.
